Tools for researchers
Global kids online
Global Kids Online is an international research project that aims to generate and sustain a rigorous cross-national evidence base around children’s use of the internet by creating a global network of researchers and experts.
The project developed a global research toolkit that would enable academics, governments, civil society and other actors to carry out reliable and standardised national research with children and their parents on the opportunities, risks and protective factors of children’s internet use.
Tools for researchers: quallitative tools, quantitative tools, method guides, adapting the tools ans impact tool.

The State of the World’s Children 2017: Children in a Digital
World examines the ways in which digital technology has already changed children’s lives and life chances – and explores what the future may hold.
If leveraged in the right way and made universally accessible, digital technology can be a game changer for children being left behind – whether because of poverty, race, ethnicity, gender, disability, displacement or geographic isolation – connecting them to a world of opportunity and providing them with the skills they need to succeed in a digital world.
But unless we expand access, digital technology may create new divides that prevent children from ful lling their potential. And if we don’t act now to keep pace with rapid change, online risks may make vulnerable children more susceptible to exploitation, abuse and even traf cking – as well as more subtle threats to their well-being.
This report argues for faster action, focused investment and greater cooperation to protect children from the harms of a more connected world – while harnessing the opportunities of the digital age to bene t every child.

Judi is responsible for the eSmart Schools Framework development and implementation in all schools across Australia and is an expert on cybersafety for children. European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators: DigCompEdu

As the teaching professions face rapidly changing demands, educators require an increasingly broad and more sophisticated set of competences than before. In particular the ubiquity of digital devices and the duty to help students become digitally competent requires educators to develop their own digital competence. On International and national level a number of frameworks, self-assessment tools and training programmes have been developed to describe the facets of digital competence for educators and to help them assess their competence, identify their training needs and offer targeted training. Analysing and clustering these instruments, this report presents a common European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu). DigCompEdu is a scientifically sound background framework which helps to guide policy and can be directly adapted to implement regional and national tools and training programmes. In addition, it provides a common language and approach that will help the dialogue and exchange of best practices across borders. The DigCompEdu framework is directed towards educators at all levels of education, from early childhood to higher and adult education, including general and vocational training, special needs education, and non-formal learning contexts.

This report examines children’s media literacy. It provides detailed evidence on media use, attitudes and understanding among children and young people aged 5 - 15, as well as detailed information about the media access and use of young children aged 3 - 4.
The report also includes findings relating to parents’ views about their children’s media use, and the ways that parents seek – or decide not – to monitor or limit use of different types of media.

Este relatório apresenta os resultados da 3.ª edição do projeto da Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social "Públicos e Consumos de Media", desenvolvida em parceria com a Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Esta edição tem como tema principal de análise os usos de meios eletrónicos por crianças (3-8 anos). Procurou-se identifcar os ambientes de ecrãs (televisão, computadores, consolas, telemóveis, tablets...) em que vivem as crianças destas idades, os seus modos de acesso e usos, como os pais orientam esses usos e as suas atitudes e preocupações.

FAMÍLIA.COM: famílias, crianças (0-6) e tecnologias digitais

As crianças de hoje crescem com tecnologias, utilizando-as diariamente, acedendo numa idade cada vez mais jovem. Em casa, as famílias têm acesso a uma panóplia de dispositivos, como o tablet, o smartphone, a televisão, a consola de jogos, entre outros. Esta evolução força os pais à difícil tarefa de se atualizarem com regularidade, promovendo uma utilização segura e de qualidade dos dispositivos digitais, acompanhando-as nesta utilização e encontrando um propósito no seu uso. A utilização da web por crianças pode trazer benefícios, mas juntamente com estes trás a exposição a alguns riscos. Por isso, é relevante investigar as atividades que as crianças realizam online e os riscos a que estão expostas, já que é cada vez mais importante a promoção da segurança e a capacitação dos pais para essa questão.
Através deste estudo exploratório, onde foram entrevistadas 15 famílias portuguesas com filhos até 6 anos, pretendeu-se conhecer as atividades das crianças com os meios digitais, perceber como as tecnologias são entendidas pelos diferentes membros das famílias e como é feita a gestão da utilização dos meios digitais.
